Can you tell us a little about yourself?
I am a homeschooling mom of 3, and DONA Certified Postpartum Doula. I serve all of the Hampton Roads area (Chesapeake VA is my city). I’ve been married to an amazing man for 15 years this Wednesday (4/24), who has supported me through becoming a small business owner.
What products/services do you offer?
I am a Postpartum Doula, I help mothers in their 4th Trimester. I have been called a Fairy Godmother because I come in and I help moms recover, bond and relax the first couple weeks. I cook and clean, and help take care of the baby so mom and dad can nap or shower in those 1st couple weeks that may seem like a blur.
What inspired you to start your business?
The real inspiration was my sister, who struggled horribly with Postpartum Depression and there was no one there to help her because it was “taboo” to admit you had something wrong. The breaking moment was when I pulled her from the middle of the road and got her help. Then when I had my own, it was 2 weeks of full support and meals, then I was on my own basically. And at the time I was the only one of my group of friend, to have a kid. So I reached out to someone with a son the same age and really started to create a network. Because after 2 weeks, it doesn’t always get easier. So I created a place for moms. And I started looking for new moms in our church, or anywhere that needed the help. I would make meals, come over if they were struggling. Finally, after dragging my husband to the hospital after a friends birth, he told me to do something with this. Make it a job. And I did. That moment of “this is what I was meant to do” will always be in my head. Holding a baby and seeing it clearly.
