I can admit that at one point on my entrepreneurship journey, I completely lost focus on my “why” because I allowed myself to be influenced by the many voices on the internet. If you’re on social media, I am sure that you have seen and heard many people telling you how you need to talk and behave to be successful in business. My best advice for you is, don’t get caught up in all of that. I caused myself unnecessary setbacks by switching up how I’d always done things, which was actually working for me, to do things the way I saw others doing them, which didn’t work for me. What I had to learn is that most people teach from experience and what works for them may not work for me. Also, what you think is working for others may not even be working for them. Let’s face it, on social media people can say or be anything. To be safe, just stay true to what feels right for you. Do your research and be confident in your decisions.
Every brand is different. Your “why” is not the same as others. Once you are clear about the message and impact you want your brand to have, don’t change it just because someone else appears to be doing it differently or better than you. You know how a brand becomes a well-known and successful brand? Consistency and dependability. The people who fall in love with your brand like you just the way you are. They want you to improve, but they don’t want to show up one day to find you being something they are completely unfamiliar with. That’s a great way to lose them forever. I think the most beautiful thing about creating a brand is that it can be whatever you want it to be.
Everyone won’t like it or understand it, but your people, the people who your gifts are meant to attract and impact, will. I’m sure that if you think of your favorite successful girl bosses, you will see that there is something unique that attracts you to each of them. Rihanna, Beyonce, and Cardi B traveled 3 completely different roads to reach success, but they are all successful. Society will have you believe that there’s one way to think, look, and be to achieve success, but it’s just not true. Please know that you can be true to yourself and do things your way and still win.
